The Arctic Drive demo is the best way to test the game before Early Access. It is free, it is a separate Steam app, and it has been patched repeatedly since release. It is also a deliberately small slice: the developer calls it “only a small taste of the full game.”

Here is what is confirmed, what is not, and how to use the demo without mistaking it for the final game.

How to download it

  1. Open the Arctic Drive Demo page on Steam.
  2. Install the demo like any other Steam app. It is separate from the main game, so it will appear as its own entry in your library.
  3. Check the demo’s own system-requirements panel before downloading. The main game lists Windows 10/11, 15 GB storage and a broadband connection.
  4. If the demo does not launch or you find a bug, use the Steam discussion forums or the official Discord. The developer has been actively patching the demo.

What is in the demo

The developer’s release post describes the demo as a taste of the Early Access build, including:

  • A scenario that puts you into the scavenging, crafting and driving loop.
  • Multiple biomes where the road changes and challenges you in different ways.
  • Blizzards and the need to find shelter.
  • Shopping cart interaction — a small, very physical detail that tells you a lot about the engine.
  • A tutorial / guided start so new players do not freeze on night one.
  • Localization — the demo included French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Korean, Japanese and Simplified Chinese at the open playtest, with 14 interface languages now listed on Steam.

The demo also includes the Brian scenario: Brian went to get more gas and never came back, and you follow him. The official screenshot of a cabin note reading “BRIAN GONE?” is part of that setup.

The shopping cart is not a metaphor. It is a physics object, and the official demo announcement used it to make that point.Official Steam announcement, October 2026

What is not in the demo

The developer has not published a complete exclusion list, so we will not invent one. What we can say:

  • It is not the full game. The developer explicitly calls it a small taste.
  • It is not a final balance pass. Loot, hydration, damage and vehicle stats changed repeatedly during the demo period.
  • It is not a complete content list. The Early Access roadmap includes story, custom/sandbox mode, wheel support, console support and new biomes. The demo does not represent all of that.
  • Tornadoes are not confirmed as a demo feature. The November 4 announcement was framed around the road to Early Access, not a demo patch note.

Does demo progress carry over?

The developer has not announced demo-to-Early-Access progress carry-over. We checked the demo release post, the Steam page, the Early Access statement and the update notes; none promises that a demo save will become an Early Access save.

Plan as if it will not. Use the demo to learn the systems, not to build a character you expect to keep. If the developer announces carry-over later, we will update this page and the FAQ.

What to practice in the demo

  • The garage sequence. Learn how parts attach, how the engine panel reads and how long a repair takes in the cold.
  • Weight. Load the car, drive, brake and turn. Notice how the vehicle feels different with cargo.
  • Crafting. Run a full loop: loot, recycle, research, craft. The exact costs will change; the workflow will not.
  • Weather decisions. Practise stopping early. The demo’s storm timer is not the full game’s weather system, but the instinct transfers.
  • Co-op communication. Test voice chat and role division with the people you plan to play with at launch.
  • Your own fuel numbers. Note how the HUD reports fuel and economy, then use those numbers in the fuel planner. Do not assume the demo’s balance is the launch balance.

What is still unknown

  • Whether demo progress carries into Early Access.
  • Whether the demo will remain available after November 25.
  • Which Early Access features will be absent from the demo at launch.
  • Whether tornadoes are in the current demo build.
  • Whether the demo will receive further patches after Early Access launches.
