Arctic Drive base building: trailers, RVs and mobile power
Turn a trailer or RV into a working mobile base in Arctic Drive: confirmed modules, power, heat, storage and the trade-offs to plan before launch.
WP 06Waypoints / 8 sections
A trailer or RV is the closest thing Arctic Drive has to a home. It carries the supplies, powers the benches, heats the living space and gives a four-player group a shared place to sort loot. It is also a heavy object attached to a car on an icy road.
The base-building system is partially documented. We know the module categories and several confirmed behaviors; we do not know the exact power budgets, module weights or slot limits. This guide stays on the confirmed side and gives you a planning order that survives a balance pass.
Why a mobile base
The August 2026 “Camper Crafting” update made trailers into real mobile bases. The developer added crafting and cooking benches, transport boxes, heaters and electricity. Trailers also consume a small amount of fuel when attached, and crafting from a trailer bench consumes fuel.
That last detail is important: a mobile base is not free shelter. It is a second fuel consumer, a second thing to repair and a second thing that can be lost in a crash. The benefit is range and consistency: you can carry more, craft on the road and sleep away from a POI instead of driving back to the starting garage.
The publisher frames trailers and RVs as “real mobile bases” where players install bunks, a microwave, a radio and storage, add solar panels and batteries, and mount a resource scanner or storm scanner. That is the intended fantasy. The practical question is what to install first.
Trailer vs RV
Both are confirmed mobile bases. The public materials do not give a clean comparison, so here is what we can say without guessing:
| Question | Trailer | RV / camper |
|---|---|---|
| Confirmed? | Yes | Yes |
| Can be built in? | Yes — benches, cooking, transport boxes, heaters, electricity | Yes — bunks, microwave, radio, storage; camper crafting |
| Fuel cost | Consumes a small amount of fuel when attached | Not documented |
| Handling | Towed; improved attachment in demo v0.19.2 | Self-propelled; driving model not documented |
| Best use | Extending a car-based run without replacing the car | A larger, self-contained base if you can find one |
A trailer is the safer planning assumption because its behavior is better documented. An RV may be the better long-term base, but we will not pretend to know its fuel economy or module capacity before launch.
Confirmed modules
The following modules are named by the publisher or developer. They are grouped by function, not by an invented tier list.
Warmth
- Heater — vehicle and trailer module.
- Fire — confirmed heat and cooking source.
- Insulated shelter — cabins, shacks and gas stations.
Power
- Solar panels — power generation.
- Extra batteries — power storage.
- Lights — interior and exterior lighting.
- Generator — powers benches and recyclers; burns fuel.
Storage
- Cargo boxes — secure loose supplies.
- Transport boxes — multiple sizes, craftable or lootable.
- Shelves — additional storage inside the base.
Living & utility
- Bunks — sleeping space.
- Microwave — comfort / food module.
- Radio — music and comfort.
- Instruments — found and played.
- Resource scanner — locates fuel, food and parts.
- Storm scanner — warns of blizzards.

Heat and power
The base’s power system is confirmed but under-specified. Solar panels and extra batteries power heaters and lights. Generators power crafting benches and recyclers, and they consume fuel. Trailers gained heaters and electricity in the August 2026 update. What we do not have is a wattage table, a day/night solar curve or a module power draw list.
That means your build order should be redundant rather than optimal:
- One heat source that does not depend on the sun. A heater plus a generator, or a heater plus a running engine, gives you a fallback at night.
- One power source you can refuel. Solar is silent and free once installed, but it is not confirmed to work through a blizzard or at night. A generator is louder and thirstier, but it is predictable.
- One light source that is not the headlights. Lights are confirmed. A dark base is a navigation hazard and a mood problem.
- Spare fuel for the base, not just the car. The trailer consumes fuel when attached, the generator consumes fuel, and crafting from a trailer bench consumes fuel. Three small draws add up.
Storage and cargo
Storage is the difference between a base and a pile. The game has cargo boxes, transport boxes and shelves in multiple sizes, and the closed beta added a cargo placement system. Because every object is physical, storage is not just a menu capacity: a box can be opened, moved, dropped and lost.
A practical storage layout:
- Vehicle emergency box: fuel, water, food, repair kit, light, revival kit.
- Base pantry: long-term food and water, cooking ingredients, medicine.
- Workshop box: vehicle parts, tools, sledgehammer, spare radiator and battery.
- Salvage box: scrap, Organics and Chem for the next crafting session.
- Personal boxes: optional, but useful in a four-player group so nobody “borrows” the only repair kit.
Secure the load before a storm. The August 2026 update says blizzards move objects with high force. A base that is not storm-secured is just a better-organized wreck.
Crafting while parked
A trailer can host a crafting bench and a cooking bench. Crafting from the trailer bench consumes fuel, so the base is a workshop with a running cost. The closed-beta update also made crafting benches and recyclers require generator power. That means a serious crafting stop needs three things: a bench, power and fuel.
The payoff is real. A mobile base lets you convert salvage into parts without driving back to a fixed station. The cost is that every crafting session competes with the car for fuel. If the tank is low, drive first and craft later; a bench cannot move the base.

Build priorities
A sensible order for a first mobile base:
- Heat. A heater or a reliable fire setup. Cold is the base’s first failure mode.
- Power. A battery and a generation method. Without power, the benches and lights are furniture.
- Secure storage. Cargo boxes and transport boxes. Loose loot is a storm liability.
- Water and food. A cooking bench and a pantry. The base should reduce the number of supply stops, not increase them.
- Workshop. Crafting bench, tools and spare parts. This is what turns the base into a repair station.
- Awareness. Resource scanner and storm scanner. These are force multipliers, not foundations.
- Comfort. Bunks, radio, microwave, decorations and instruments. Important for morale and the fantasy, but not the first thing that keeps you alive.
The official roadmap lists more vehicles, parts and trailers in Early Access and beyond, plus mod support and car mods in the post-launch Expeditions updates. The base system is going to grow. Build for the mechanics you can verify today, not for a hypothetical module that might arrive in six months.
What is still unknown
- Module power draw, battery capacity and solar output.
- Whether heaters run on electricity, fuel or both.
- How many modules a trailer or RV can hold, and whether slots are universal.
- Whether bunks provide a real sleep mechanic or only a visual/comfort feature.
- How much fuel a trailer consumes while attached, and how load changes it.
- Whether the storm scanner can predict tornadoes or only blizzards.
- Whether base modules can be removed and reused after a crash.
