Arctic Drive’s survival loop is not a row of cosmetic bars. It is the reason a short drive takes planning: hunger, thirst and body temperature keep moving while you repair, loot and drive. The car protects you from distance; the supplies protect you from time.

The exact drain rates and damage thresholds are not public. This guide sticks to the systems the developer and publisher have confirmed, explains how they interact, and leaves the numbers for post-launch testing.

The three meters

The official feature list names three survival pressures: hunger, thirst and body temperature. The HUD in official screenshots also shows a stamina system and a body-temperature readout. The closed beta added fall damage, stun from heavy impacts, a player damage system and contaminated drinks. Demo v0.19.2 rebalanced hydration, pee needs, stamina cost per jump, mixture effects, loot and damage.

In practical terms, the three meters answer three different questions:

  • Hunger: can I keep working, or do I need to stop and eat?
  • Thirst: do I have safe water, and how long until the next source?
  • Body temperature: is the environment beating my clothing, shelter and heat source?

They overlap. A long repair in a cold garage burns time and body heat; a long drive burns fuel and attention; a storm can force you to choose between shelter and progress. The survival skill is not topping every meter — it is not running two of them down at the same time.

Body temperature and warmth

The publisher describes managing body temperature in a harsh winter climate, avoiding hypothermia by cooking, making a fire or keeping the engines running. Clothing is part of the equation: the demo’s opening objective is “Get dressed.” The exact insulation values of clothing are not published.

Confirmed heat sources and warmth tools include:

  • Fires: named in the official feature list, with cooking and warmth as the obvious use.
  • Vehicle engines: keeping the engine running can help you avoid hypothermia, but it burns fuel and ties your survival to a machine that can fail.
  • Heaters: a confirmed vehicle and trailer module. Trailers gained heaters and electricity in the August 2026 update.
  • Shelter: cabins, shacks, gas stations and other POIs can provide safety from a blizzard. The store description explicitly says a stop might give you “nothing but safety from a blizzard,” which is still a win.
  • Consumables: protein bars are described as warming the player for three to five minutes. Anti-frost pills exist as a Cooking Bench recipe, but their duration and effect are not documented.

The strategic point is margin. Do not wait until the screen tells you that you are freezing. If the weather is closing in and the next shelter is uncertain, stop at the shelter you have. A day spent warm is not a wasted day if the alternative is a run-ending hypothermia.

Hunger and food

Food can be found, foraged, hunted or cooked. The developer’s copy mentions hunting or foraging, but the published roadmap lists wildlife as a full-release milestone. That does not prove there is no hunting in Early Access; it means the scope of hunting is not clearly documented. For planning, rely on found food, foraging and cooking rather than assuming a reliable animal population.

Confirmed food-related systems:

  • A **Cooking Bench** for food and survival supplies, added in the closed-beta crafting overhaul.
  • **Protein bars** that warm the player for three to five minutes, added in the July 2026 update.
  • **Painkillers and anti-frost pills** as Cooking Bench recipes.
  • **Loot rebalancing** that reduced excess food and drinks during the closed beta, and further loot balancing in demo v0.19.2. Food is meant to be scarce.

Do not eat the moment the bar dips. Eat before a long drive, before a repair in an unheated space, or before a storm. The best time to use food is when it buys you the ability to finish a task, not when it merely postpones a stop you are about to make anyway.

Thirst, water and contamination

Water is a confirmed survival need and a confirmed scavenging target. The press kit says players can melt snow for water. The closed beta added contaminated drinks, and update 0.9.4 added a water cooler environment container with an explicit warning: “it’s not always water in there.”

That creates a risk decision. A water cooler is a potential supply, but it is not guaranteed safe. The game has a damage system and a hydration system, and demo v0.19.2 rebalanced hydration and pee needs. What the public notes do not explain is the exact purification or contamination model. We do not know whether boiling, cooking or a filter removes contamination. Treat unknown liquids as a last resort until you have tested them.

Cooking and medicine

The Cooking Bench is the confirmed food and medicine station. It can craft food, painkillers, anti-frost pills and other survival supplies. Later updates made some Cooking Bench and big-box recipes available by default in campers, and allowed players to build a cooking bench in a trailer.

Medicine is not a substitute for prevention. Painkillers address pain and anti-frost pills address cold, but the exact duration, stacking and side effects are not published. The closed beta also added fall damage and stun from heavy impacts, so the best medical plan is still: do not fall, do not crash, do not get caught outside.

Shelter and heat sources

Shelter is the most underrated survival tool. The world contains cabins, shacks, gas stations and other points of interest; some are loot-rich, some are nearly empty. A building that stops the wind can be more valuable than a full jerrycan if the alternative is driving through a whiteout.

When you stop, think in layers:

  1. Stop the wind. Get inside or behind a solid structure. A blizzard can move physical objects, so do not leave loose gear outside.
  2. Start a heat source. A fire, heater or running engine buys time. Check fuel before you commit to keeping it running.
  3. Eat and drink. Warm food and safe water help you recover from the approach; they do not replace shelter.
  4. Secure the car. Park with an exit in mind. Do not box yourself in with a trailer or cargo you cannot move in a hurry.
  5. Decide whether to wait or move. A storm that is still building is different from a storm that is already on top of you. The storm scanner is a confirmed base module that warns of incoming blizzards, but its lead time is unknown.

A survival routine that fits the road

A simple routine is more useful than a perfect spreadsheet:

  • Before driving: eat, drink, check body temperature, check fuel and check the weather window.
  • Before leaving the car: take water, food, a light source and a repair option. Do not walk into a POI empty-handed.
  • Before a repair: confirm you have shelter and heat. A long repair in the open is a cold trap.
  • Before a storm: secure cargo, park sensibly, and decide whether the next shelter is reachable with a margin.
  • Before sleeping or logging off: save, note the fuel and temperature situation, and leave the car in a place you can find again.

What is still unknown

We will test these after launch and update the guide with measured results, not assumptions:

  • The safe body-temperature range and the rate of heat loss in different weather.
  • How clothing, vehicle cabins, heaters and fires stack.
  • The exact hunger and thirst drain rates, and whether they scale with activity.
  • Whether boiling, cooking or any other process removes contamination from water.
  • The duration and side effects of painkillers and anti-frost pills.
  • Whether sleep is a real mechanic or only a base-building flavor feature.
  • The scope of hunting in Early Access versus the full release.
